Suspicious Noises, 2012

“It is in her soberly coloured pastel drawings that the preciousness of the films is shed, and we are thrown in the contemporary moment. The lines, rough and sketchy, jump off the page and right at you. Her subjects, often standing alone, either personify or defy power. They are shown in an almost surreal fashion; devoid of a setting and of signifying contextual markers, while they float rootless on the white page. These figures do not belong, they are broken off from the group or confront something “other”: a police officer fighting a chicken, two men standing back-to-back with a box on their heads, a man hiding behind a free-standing wall. In these drawings we detect an unfinished sensibility, a capturing of something that is still very much in-progress, an uncompleted journey. Gone is the softness and understated violence of the films, here the collision of forces and of possibilities is energetically clear in an open confrontation.”
